Children’s Research and Innovation Centre

An Extension of Duration of Planning Permission is being sought for the Children’s Research and Innovation Centre (CRIC), a critical component of the National Children’s Hospital, until 2031. This follows the original planning permission granted in 2016 for the wider St James’s Hospital development, which is due to expire.

The application relates only to extending the timeframe for delivery of the CRIC and does not propose changes to the approved development itself.

CRIC will provide a dedicated home for paediatric research, innovation and education, helping ensure that today’s research becomes tomorrow’s healthcare through the development of new treatments, earlier diagnoses and improved outcomes for children and young people.

Planning Context

Planning permission for the CRIC was originally granted in April 2016 as part of the wider National Children’s Hospital parent permission approved by An Bord Pleanála (Application number: PA29S.PA0043). Significant elements of the wider development are substantively complete, including the main hospital building and associated facilities.

The CRIC remains the principal uncommenced element of the approved scheme. The current application seeks an extension of duration to allow sufficient time for the CRIC to be delivered. The application does not propose changes to the approved development.
